An early 20th century Ceylonese (Sri Lankan) unmarked silver tobacco jar or betel box, probably Kandy circa 1920 The lid of domed form surmounted by a cast and chased figure of a Hamsa bird, the base of tapering cylindrical form. The lid with chased decoration of three vignettes of foliate scrolls, each with a different symbol, a shell, two fish and a water pot, all above a corded edge with a meander scroll band. The base section with foliate scrolls above a cloud form band. Height – 12.3 cm / 4.75 inches Diameter (at base) – 10.5 cm / 4.05 inches Weight – 235 grams / 7.56 ozt
