A pair of George II Scottish sterling silver salts, Edinburgh 1759 by William Gilchrist (reg. 1736) Each of compressed oval ‘cauldron’ form, raised on three cabriole legs with pad feet and shell junctions. Each with scalloped rims. Each fully marked underneath. Each later engraved ‘Asylum Morningside†with numerals 11 and 12 respectively. Each fully marked underneath. Diameter – 7 cm / 2.75 inches Weight – 159 grams / 5.11 ozt Gilchrist was Deacon of the Incorporation of Goldsmiths and made the 1752 Leith Race prize, a gold two-handled cup and cover now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Royal Edinburgh Aslym was found in 1813, at Morningside Place, it is quite possible these salts came from Craighouse which was built as an annex for the Royal Edinburgh Aslym by architect Sydney Mitchell in 1887. It was intended as a private mental health hospital, which has numerous sitting rooms and dining rooms.
