Virgin of Chiquinquirá", Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada, Colombia, ff. S. XVII. Collage made of fabrics, mother of pearl, emeralds and sequins with its original painted and gilded wood frame. Represents the patron Virgin of Colombia, flanked by San Antonio de Padua and San Andrés, following the model of the original miraculous painting. The metallic lace on the edges of the representation besieged the work at the end of the 17th century. The original canvas from 1562 is preserved in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá. The history of this Virgin goes back to the 16th century, when the Dominicans were evangelizing the region. A Spanish gentleman builds a house for the administration of settlers, natives and slaves that was to include a chapel. When later the missionary Dominican friar And'res de Jadraque arrives, he decides to place in the chapel a canvas dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary, a dedication to the order. The Spanish painter Alonso de Narvaez is in charge of painting it on indigenous cotton. It remains in the chapel for ten years until the humidity deteriorates it completely, so it is transferred to the town of Chiquinquirá where it is left in a room. A local woman, María Ramos, decides to repair the canvas and grant it a privileged place in the chapel and begins to pray asking the Virgin of the Rosary to manifest herself. In 1586 the painting had recovered its colors and brilliance, producing the miracle. size: 28 x 31 cms.
