Immaculate, Carved, polychrome, gilded, corleada and stewed wooden sculpture, Viceroyalty of New Spain, Mexico h. 1740-1760. The Virgin, with her removable wooden crown, leans on the orb, decorated with painted trees and surrounded by a serpent, which carries a voluminous apple in its mouth. The Virgin wears a white tunic with small colored plant motifs, as seen in other Mexican Immaculate Conquests (Museo de la Basilica de Guadalupe and Museo Amparo de Puebla) and, singularly, wears the back of the red cloak studded with stars, as in the oil painting of Echave, el Viejo, from the Cathedral of Mexico. It rests on a baroque pedestal decorated with naturalistic flowers. Extraordinary conservation. Total Height: 80 cms.
