Designed as a flexible strand of fancifully formed links with a moulded rectangular clasp, interspersed with two shield shaped pendants with stylised filigree decor and granulation, set with sapphire and moonstone cabochons, small rose-cut diamonds and pearl boutons. With two interchangeable central pendants: rectangular scissor-cut fire opal of ca. 12 ct (ca. 20.26 x 14.00 x 9.52 mm) and an oval Ceylon moonstone cabochon of ca. 26 ct (ca. 21.10 x 13.20 x 13.10 mm). According to family tradition, the necklace was created in the late 1920s and was reworked in 1932 for the grandmother of the present owner, with the fire opal being included as a replacement for another centrepiece. This seems quite plausible, as the chain and shield-shaped decorative clasps fit well into the goldsmith's oeuvre from that time and are carried out in a lighter shade of gold than the settings of the other central stones.
