It is a copy of the original work of George Rommey "The Parson's daughter", also known as "A lady in a Brown Dress" of 1785 and currently preserved in the Tate Museum in London. George Romney was trained in the workshop of the portraitist Christopher Steele, who taught him the precise handling of the oil technique. In 1762 he arrived in London, where he worked away from the exhibitions and academic guidelines directed by Joshua Reynolds, at the Royal Academy. Between 1773 and 1775 he remained in Rome, where he studied Antiquity, making copies of Michelangelo and Raphael Sanzio. Back in London, he frequented intellectual circles and delved into classical literature to create the great compositions of John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, created from 1786. The scenes inspired by Macbeth or Milton's Paradise Lost (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) fascinate with their strong contrasts of light and shadow, influenced, like his abundant drawings, by the aesthetics of the sublime and the images of Johann Heinrich Füssli. The elegant classicism of his early works, yields with greater maturity in favor of a delightful sentimentality, where references to the classical world are fully anecdotal. Instead of delving into the psychology of his sitters or looking for the perfect resemblance, Romney prefers to highlight the most striking qualities of his models. His clientele appreciates the staging, which always highlights their high social standing or, in the case of the portraits of young people and children, such as Master Ward (Prado), their kindness and gentleness.
