Note: This piece is a classic artwork by the French post-war artist Rene Roche. The fact that Roche was a largely self-taught painter and sculptor can be seen to lend his work a particular aspect of individuality and originality. His work nevertheless displays the influence of artists such as Piet Mondrian and Kasimir Malevich, primarily in his adoption of geometric abstraction. In this way, Roche’s work serves as an exploration of the nature of forms and colour, and the relationship and interaction between different elements in space, whist the large scale and bright primary colours of this work lend it a sense of vibrancy and energy. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes de Vienne from 1957, winning first prize in 1963, the same year as his first solo exhibition.Please refer to department for condition report
