Hans Hartung, German/French 1904-1989- Untitled sketch on the front page of catalogue, 1980; crayon, signed lower right, 34x28cm (bound book) (ARR) Note: Hans Hartung was a German-French abstract painter who was influenced in part by German Expressionists such as Emil Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka. The present piece exemplifies Hartungs instantly recognisable approach, consisting of bold lines which convey a somewhat frenetic energy, implying of the force and movement employed by the artist in making these marks. This technique links Hartung to the American Lyrical Abstraction movement, and particularly artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, upon whom he was a significant influence, whilst also emphasising the originality of his approach and the distinctness of his works. Hartungs works are in the collection of the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, amongst others. Please refer to department for condition report
