Serge Poliakoff (1906 Moskau - 1969 Paris) (F) 'Composition rose', lithograph in colours on Arches, 1959, 54.2 cm x 72.5 cm sheet size, 45 cm x 60 cm plate size, signed, numbered 30/75, mounted, centre with expertly restored spotLiterature: Cat. rais. Poliakoff/Schneider 22The Russian painter Serge Poliakoff was born in Moscow on 8th January 1900. He is considered an important representative of the "École de Paris" and of Modern Abstract Painting in France. In 1917 he fled the Russian Revolution and arrived in Paris, where he studied at the Academies Forchot and de la Grande Chaumiére as of 1929. In the late 1930s he discovered geometric abstraction.Poliakoff developed his own pictorial language and a unique form of abstract painting by directly juxtaposing clear geometric forms with contrasting colours, " to the exclusion of linear elements. The work "Composition rose" impressively illustrates Poliakoff's pictorial language. The combination and superimposition of relatively few primary colours in earth-toned nuances already hints at his tendency toward monochrome designs in his late work.
