PROPERTY OF VARIOUS OWNERS A Fine and Rare Gilt Dry Lacquer figure of Avalokitesvara17th century Seated in dyhanasana , the left and right hand posed to possibly hold a lotus stem or a kalasa , his wide-sleeved robes worn over both shoulders and falling in gentle folds around his legs and to the front and tied on a neat bow at his mid-belly below simple jewels framing his exposed chest, his serene expression framed by wide-lobed pendant ears and set off by a xiangcai patterned diadem centered on a fragment of a seated buddha framing his black lacquered hair dressed in unusual and elegantly plaited and tiered locks, the figure covered overall with gilt lacquer worn in places and with good patina. 23 1/2in (59.7cm) high 十七世紀 乾漆夾苧金漆觀音坐像 Provenance: Acquired by he ballet dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky in China, 1920's, by repute Acquired from the granddaughter of Vaslav Nijinsky, San Francisco, 1960's Harry Lawrence, Laguna Beach, California 出處: 傳舊金山 Vaslav Nijinsky 於 1920 年代購於中國 1960 年代購自舊金山 Vaslav Nijinsky 的孫女 加州拉古納海灘 Harry Lawrence 藏 This striking dry lacquer figure of the Goddess of Mercy is expertly made demonstrating superb craftsman, naturalistically rendering the soft folds of the robe cascading over the shoulders and legs, the face gracefully conveying the benevolence of the deity.
