A FINELY CARVED BAMBOO WRIST RESTXu Subai (1909-1976) The tall curved section elegantly carved using the pale skin as a lush vignette of peonies, grasses and seasonal flowers, inscribed lower right Hanting hua, Subai ke 寒汀畫 素白刻, (painted by Jiang Hanting 江寒汀, carved by Xu Subai 徐素白) and upper-left entitled Bai hua qi fang 百花齊放 (One Hundred Blossoms), set into a stepped hongmu stand. 12 1/8in (31.2cm) high; 4 3/4in (12cm) wide 徐素白(1909-1976) 竹刻臂擱 Xu Subai was one of the preeminent bamboo carvers who revitalized the craft in the 20th century. A brush holder by him made in 1961 is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection, Purchase, Friends of Asian Art Gifts, 2008.421.
