PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION A rectangular Jade Pendant with Seated Scholars under pine1800-1900 One side carved in high relief with two scholars seated at a table with a peach on a dish between them, a pine tree rises behind them, along one vertical edge of the pendant, the upper branches wrapped in mist or clouds, cleverly utilizing areas of the russet skin to highlight the scene, the reverse side with a fourteen-character inscription in low relief followed by the signature Zigang and within a simply delineated frame, pierced for suspension. 2 7/16in (6.1cm) high, box 十九世紀 白玉帶皮松下學究玉牌飾 子岡款 Most pendants of this type have relatively low-relief decoration on both sides so this example can be considered fairly unusual, though not unknown, in having the one side carved in extremely high relief using the 'skin' of the pebble to highlight the design, whilst still possessing the requisite low-relief calligraphy to the other. For another example utilizing the same 'high' and 'low' relief but carved from a jade of black and white tone, see the exhibition catalogue, Virtuous Treasures, Chinese Jades for the Scholar's Table , University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, 17 November 2007 - 17 February 2008, pp. 162-163, no. 91, from the Michael S. L. Liu collection.
