An early maiolica bowl, c.1350-1400, possibly Orvieto, painted in manganese and turquoise, the centre divided into three panels, the central panel with foliate designs, the flanking panels each with a fish, the border with eight rectangular panels of hatched and triangular ornament, 18.8 cm diameterThis bowl is in poor condition, but this is to be expected for pieces of this type and period, which are very rarely in reasonable condition and are usually fragmentary. The condition is listed in more detail below: It is extensively restored with sections of the rim (with part of the well) broken out, restuck and repaired. These repairs are crude and have yellowed considerably with age. Large parts of the repair have flaked away revealing that this part of the repair consists of replacement material, rather than the original ceramic body (this charming bowl would benefit from being restored again, or simply having all the restoration removed). In addition, there are slight cracks to the rim – the longest of these is approximately 3 cm. long – these are minor.
