A KOZAN STYLE 'IMMORTAL AND PHOENIX' SATSUMA CERAMIC VASE, MEIJIJapan, 1868-1912. Made in the style of the Makuzu (Miyagawa) Kozan workshop. Of squared oval shape, rising from a spreading foot, decorated in polychrome enamels and gold, the body inset with a sunken oval panel to one side, depicting an immortal standing on a rock, gazing downwards, above colorful clouds, the reverse with a phoenix, framed by geometrical borders, the side with ruyi shaped clouds and black cranes, the neck and rim with swirls and floral sprays.Condition: Glaze flakes, firing cracks, chips and losses to exposed areas. Larger breakages at the neck, base, and shoulders, restored.WEIGHT 2,757 gHEIGHT 33.5 cmMakuzu Kozan, also known as Miyagawa Kozan, was a potter from Kyoto who set up a workshop in the suburbs of Yokohama in 1871 to produce ceramics for export to Europe and North America.
