PROPERTIES FROM A FRENCH COLLECTOR OF JADE CARVINGS AND SNUFFBOTTLES A PALE CELADON JADE SNUFF BOTTLE CARVED AS A BUDDHA’S HAND - FÓSHǑU - 佛手 OR A FINGERED CITRON CHINA, POSSIBLY LATE QING DYNASTY This snuff bottle has been naturalistically carved as a fingered citron, also known as Buddha’s hand, with leaves. It has a nice and sweet polish and is finely detailed with incisions such as on its tendrils. The inner part is basically hollowed. Offered at auction together with a matching stopper shaped as a branch. H (stopper excluded): 8,5 cm Weight: 92,6 grams Provenance: Property from a French collector: a collection of jade and stone carvings and snuff bottles assembled over two decades. Pieces either bought privately or at public auction. Note: The citron is a bright yellow lemon-like fruit with a thick rind and long finger-like tendrils. Because it resembles the familiar hand position of the Buddha, the citron has the auspicious Chinese name of foshou (佛手) which literally means ‘Buddha's Hand’.
