A rare Caughley pounce pot, circa 1780-85A rare Caughley pounce pot, circa 1780-85Of 'bobbin' shape with a swollen centre and a spreading rim and foot, the dished top pierced with holes in a formal pattern, the sides printed in blue with small flower sprigs, the top edge and footrim with printed hexagonal cell borders, 8.8cm high, printed C markProvenanceBonhams, 14 April 2010, lot 192Another very similar example was sold by Bonhams on 2 December 2009, lot 161. Caughley pounce pots were individually thrown and finely turned and are therefore quite varied in form. Two other 'bobbin' shaped pounce pots are illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Caughley and Worcester Porcelains (1969), pl.162. Both of these use patterns also found on inkwells. The example on the right in Godden's illustration matches the pattern on the present lot and a corresponding inkwell is shown in pl.127.
