Spanish school; 17th century."Adoration of the Magi".Oil on canvas. Re-tinted.It has restorations. It has a label of attribution to Valdés Leal on the back.Measurements: 97 x 77,5 cm; 126 x 106 cm (frame). The present painting has a landscape in which the architecture of classical aesthetics that is arranged in the upper right area of the composition stands out, showing the building in which the scene takes place and allowing to combine interior and exterior in a reduced space, and a building of importance towards the background that disassociates the biblical literalness that places the scene in a humble manger. This sense of magnificence with regard to Christ's birthplace was very common in Baroque painting, largely due to the religious crisis that Christianity was going through and the Church's attempts to show a consolidated and glorious image. As is common in depictions of the adoration of the Magi and the adoration of shepherds, a large number of figures in various poses and costumes are placed in different positions. In the foreground are two richly dressed figures adoring the Christ Child and, together with the third figure representing the Three Wise Men. On the left of the scene Mary is standing, dressed in a pink tunic and blue cloak, holding the Christ Child. The movement and lines of the figures would link the work to the Spanish Baroque school, despite the overall harmony and stagnation of the composition. The large number of figures also gives an advanced date and, above all, the use of a powerful spotlight to highlight the front, leaving the background very dark, would bring the date closer to certain details that would fully develop with the Baroque.
