17th century Central European school."S. Barnabas".Mixed media on vellum.19th century silver frame. It presents very slight humidity stains.Measurements: 20,5 x 16,5 cm, 36 x 26 cm (frame).Bordered representation of the apostle, dressed with a red tunic and a yellow toga, carrying in his hands the Gospel of Saint Matthew and a stone of his stoning in his other hand. A sea passage behind him completes the scene.Saint Barnabas was one of the first Christians mentioned in the New Testament. Scripture presents him as an apostle but different from St. Paul, considered by the Church to have a special but unequal distinction in authority with the rest of the 12.Although the date, place and circumstances of his death are historically impossible to verify, Christian tradition holds that Barnabas was martyred in Salamis, Cyprus. He is traditionally identified as the founder of the Cypriot Orthodox Church.
