His training with Li Keran and Qian Songyan greatly informs his work, with Li Keran's influence most evident in the present painting. When Zhang Ping's work was exhibited in Japan in 1987 with other students, Li Keran dubbed his followers' work as the Gu Xue Pai , the "Painstaking School".
