Small Crackle-glazed Water CoupeChina, late 19th century, circular form, with a conical bottom and slanted shoulder, resting on a bisque foot ring, decorated with Guan-type crackles in dark gray against a light gray ground, brown-etched Chenghua mark on base, with wood stand, ht. 1 1/2, wd. 3 in. Provenance: A family heirloom collection mostly formed in the 1900-20s by Dr. Frederick Whiting (1821-1946). Dr. Whiting was a philanthropic otologist/professor of Clinical Surgery in Otology at Cornell University who authored the book, Modern Mastoid Operation. He was also known as a collector of American painting, medallic art, and Asian porcelain.
