A FINE AND RARE CARVED WHITE JADE SNUFF BOTTLE1750-1800 Of white tone, of rounded form with shoulders sloping to a cylindrical neck and with a neatly carved oval footrim, very well-hollowed through a narrow mouth, carved within round panels, on one main side with a deer standing on a rock, one foot raised, beside a pine tree and rockwork, the reverse with three goats in a grassy landscape, one standing on a rock under the sun, the narrow sides carved with scrolling lotus flowerheads in Mughal style; stopper. 2 1/8in (5.5cm) high 1750-1800 白玉刻壽鹿及三羊開泰圖鼻煙壺一件 Provenance: Helen D. Ling Estate, July 29, 2007 Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. 359 Exhibited: The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD., September 30–December 9, 2018 This is an extraordinary white jade bottle. Its small size and the quality of both the stone and its carving suggests tells us that a highly aplished carver produced this miniature work of art. The traditional subject matter on both main sides is typical of that seen on bottles of different materials – one side showing a deer with the reverse showing three goats under the sun. Yet they are unusually carved to create a moreplex yet still skillful rendition. Perhaps what is most intriguing is thebination of these carvings with the scrolling lotus flower-heads on the two narrow sides, carved in Mughal style.
