A SILHOUETTE AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE1750-1860 Of rectangular form with rounded shoulders and a cylindrical neck and with a neatly carved oval footrim, very well-hollowed, the honey-brown stone with darker brown inclusions polished on one main side with an abstract design suggestive of bats in flight, surrounding a scholar holding his brush, the reverse with similar abstract inclusions; stopper. 2 3/8in (6cm) high 1750-1860 影子瑪瑙鼻煙壺一件 Provenance: Sotheby's New York, January 21, 1982 Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. 106 This is one of a magical group of silhouette agate bottles where the design is entirely natural in the stone without any surface polishing. It is very evocative with its clear design of bats and a scholar working on a painting. If one looks closely and at a certain angle, a tiger's head is also evident.
