RUTH BADER GINSBURG'S COPY OF THE 1957-58 HARVARD LAW REVIEW PHOTOGRAPH.Gelatin silver print photograph, 180 x 240 mm laid down to 280 x 330 mm mount and framed, of the members of the 1957-58 Harvard Law Review team standing on the steps of Austin Hall, photographer's imprint ("Alfred Brown Studio") at lower left mount, letterpress listing of member's names including "R.B. Ginsburg" at the lower right, very fine. Ginsburg's history includes many stories of triumphing over adversarial circumstances, but none is as inspiring as the story of her years at Harvard Law School. She entered the school as a wife and mother of an infant and performed so well that she made the Law Review as one of only two women to earn that honor during the year. (To be fair, there would likely have been more women on the Law Review if there were more than 9 total in her class.) In her second year, her husband Marty was stricken with testicular cancer and was forced to take a series of debilitating radiation treatments which left him too weak to attend class. Ruth gave the best notetakers in his class carbon sheets, which she would collect each day and type up every night so that Marty could keep up with his studies. In later years, she would reminisce fondly about the camaraderie of her friends and fellow students who rallied around and helped Marty study for his exams, but its clear to even the casual observer that it was Ruth who carried the heaviest load.
