A RUTH BADER GINSBURG WOODEN JUDGE'S GAVEL.Mixed wood gavel, 290 x 100 x 45 mm, together with mixed wood block, 35 x 115 mm (dia). "... WE HAVE GAVELS." Ginsburg's daughter-in-law Patrice Michaels, a well-knownposer and soprano, wrote a musical salute to Justice Ginsburg's life and work titled Notorious RBG in Song . The work features nine songs which explore the Justice's life story. The 8th song, "Dissenter of de Universe," is organized around 5 of Justice Ginsburg's most famous dissenting opinions. In order to set up each opinion, Patrice uses a narrator who introduces the particular case. Her conceit is to use the striking of a gavel by the narrator: one strike introduces the case, and two strikes launches the opinion. As Patrice explained the piece to Justice Ginsburg, she mentioned she was going to buy a gavel for the first performance at the Supreme Court gift shop. Justice Ginsburg said, "Don't do that: we have gavels," and then presented her daughter-in-law with this gavel and block, one of the examples from her personal collection used at judicial conferences and mock trials over the years. Notorious RBG in Song was performed February 4, 2019 at the National Museum of Women and the Arts at the National Constitution Center with Justice Ginsburg in attendance. The performance was livestreamed and is still available to view at this link: Notorious RBG in Song | The National Constitution Center. The gavel and block appear onstage for the entire performance, and are used in the song "Dissenter of de Universe" as described above. None
