A LARGE THANGKA OF A WRATHFUL DEITY, REBGONG, 18TH-19TH CENTURY Tibet. Distemper and gilt on cloth. Seated on a tiger skin draped above a cushioned throne, a second tiger skin over his shoulders, further wearing loose-fitting robes and a white cap covering his flaming hair, the wild face with a wrathful expression marked by bulging eyes, sharp fangs, and a pig-like snout, surrounded by images of teachers and monks as well as a mule-headed deity amid swirling clouds.

Provenance: Acquired by the father of the present owners around 1970 and thence by descent.
Condition: Good condition with some wear, creasing, abrasions, minor losses, possibly minor touchups.

Expert's note: Dr. David Templeman, a scholar of Tibetan Buddhism and Adjunct Research Fellow at Monash Asia Institute, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, has previously appraised the present lot and according to him, the thangka depicts a local village deity from Rebgong, which is the Tibetan name of the city of Tongren in the autonomous prefecture of Huangnan, Qinghai, China. Rebgong has a number of Tibetan Buddhist temples and gompas, including the large and significant Rongwo Monastery of the Gelug school. It is known as a center of thangka painting. Rebgong arts were named on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists in 2009.

西藏，布面膠彩描金。忿怒神面容粗獷，怒目圓睜，獠牙銳利，豬鼻；半坐於虎皮寶座之上，肩披虎皮，火焰狀頭發，雙手捧著一個裝滿祭品的碗；周圍環繞祥雲，很多宗師和僧侶在向他致敬。
