A 'REALGAR' GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, IMPERIAL GLASSWORKS, 18TH CENTURY
China, Beijing. The ovoid body rising from a flat oval foot to a waisted neck, decorated with a striking pattern of reddish-orange patches with opaque orange borders on a brown reserve.
Provenance: Jutheau, Paris, 21 November 1993, lot 128. French private collection, by repute acquired from the above (invoice lost). Thence by descent within the family to the last owner.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, manufacturing flaws such as the asymmetrical mouth, small nick and minute nibbles to the mouth.
Stopper: Wood stopper
Weight: 46.6 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 86 mm. Diameter neck 14 mm and mouth 7 mm
Expert note: Note the asymmetrical mouth opening, which clearly proves that the complete body of the body was blown into a form, and polished only later, indicating an earlier date for this bottle, as further confirmed by the elongated, slightly leaning form.
Realgar-glass is assumed to have been developed at the Imperial glassworks during the Kangxi period, when production was under the directorship of Kilian Stumpf and his fellow Jesuits, who set up the glassworks for the Emperor in 1696. Glass copies of realgar were a staple of the Imperial glassworks in Beijing, and plain realgar glass snuff bottles were made in large numbers throughout the eighteenth century, a large proportion of which was apparently produced to be distributed as gifts.
