A SANDSTONE HEAD OF A MALE DEITY, ANGKOR PERIOD, BAPHUON STYLE
Khmer Empire, 11th-12th century. Sensitively carved, the serene face with narrow almond-shaped eyes, gently arched brows, incised round pupils, a wavy mustache, and full lips, flanked by long pendulous earlobes with vertical slits, the finely incised hair arranged in braided rows rising to a conical chignon secured by a foliate tiara tied neatly at the back.
Provenance: Piasa, Paris, 12 March 2004, lot 355, sold for EUR 6,800 or approx. EUR 9,500 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), according to the current owner's notes in the auction catalog. PD Collection, Paris, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive weathering, some wear, losses, nicks, scratches, encrustations, and a fine natural patina overall.
