A GILT SAPPHIRE GLASS BUDDHA, THAILAND, AYUTTHAYA, BEFORE 1763 AD
Carved from a single block of fine sapphire-blue glass and with gilt, seated in dhyanasana, the hands in dhyanamudra, wearing a sanghati draped across his left shoulder, the face with downcast eyes below gently arched eyebrows, an aquiline nose, flanked by long pendulous ears, the smooth hair surmounted by an ushnisha.
Provenance: A private collection in New England, USA. A notable private collector in Kensington, London, United Kingdom, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition commensurate with age. Extensive old wear, remnants of gilt and lacquer, the base with signs of weathering and erosion, minor nicks and shallow surface scratches, natural imperfections to glass.
