Description

Nur Al-Din 'Abd Al-Rahman Jami (d.1492 AD): Layla wa Majnun, Kashmir, North India, circa 1800-1820, 26 miniatures, Persian manuscript on thin cream paper, 211ff., with 10 ll. of fine nastaliq' script in black ink arranged in two columns per page separated by vertical band of gold scrolling, text set in double ruled frame, polychrome illuminated double-page frontispiece, chapters separated by blue and gold cartouches, dark red leather binding with central stamped and tooled edges, green spine, folio 13cm. x 8.5cm.Provenance: UK Book Trade, 2010The paintings in this copy of the popular Persian epic show the usual characteristics of the Kashmiri painting style, including the distinctive color palette of mauve, blue, orange and gold. Kashmiri manuscripts can be categorized in two groups between the years 1750 and 1850: typical features for the later transitional period are the turbans, which replace the high, rounded hats of the eighteenth century, as well as the uncomplicated renditions of the landscape and architecture (B. Schmitz, Islamic Manuscript in the New York Public Library, 1992, p. 196). For examples of similar painting styles, see two Kashmiri manuscripts dated 1806 and 1820, illustrated in Schmitz 1992, pp. 195-199, figs. 195-198, and plate XV. Provenance: UK Book Trade, 2010Please refer to department for condition report
