George Edward Horton, British 1859-1950- An album of ten watercolours 'Bits By George Horton'; comprising: On Whitley Sands; On Tynemouth Sands; Tynemouth Cliff; Wrecked on the Black Middens; The Moring after the Storm; The Wellesley; Tynemouth from the Should Shields sands; Stranded on the South Shields sands; On the road to Marsden, Frenchman's Bay; On Marsden sands, each pencil and watercolour on paper, some heightened with scratching out, each signed 'George Horton' (lower left), each 12.6 x 19 cm., together with a loose sheet of writing paper with the titles of the watercolours signed and dated 'November 21 1898', ten (10). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Horton was born in North Shields, Northumberland, and on leaving school became a delivery boy for his father's butcher shop. Encouraged by local art enthusiasts, he began to support himself as a professional artist. He took a studio, advertised lessons in art, and began to exhibit widely. From the late 1890s, he travelled frequently to Holland, capturing Dutch towns and landscapes in watercolour with an Impressionistic style to great originality. In about 1918 Horton settled permanently in London. By this time he was establishing a wide reputation, and in 1922 had his first one-man show in Britain at Greatorex Gallery. He also showed at Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle, at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Arts, and to much acclaim in the Netherlands and Paris. He continued to make regular visits to northeast England and, after his London studio was bombed in 1940, lived in Spital Tongues, Newcastle. He died in London in 1950. 品相报告: Front board detached.
