Description

A Bolsward silver beaker Tall, tapering beaker on a moulded basal ring. Decorated with engraved fruit garlands and birds surrounding three scrollwork cartouches with scenes of Adam and Eve with the snake, Christ and the Samaritan woman, and the flight into Egypt. The lower section with birds on brackets. Inscribed to the base "JPPG Simckes Ende Houck Jacobs sin Wief", dated 1651 and with two vacant shields. H 13.1 cm, weight 148 g. Maker`s mark attributed to Jan Sjoerds, 1644. We would like to thank Professor Johan ter Molen, Apeldoorn for his kind support in cataloguing this lot. Provenance John Endlich art dealership, Haarlem; Dutch private collection. Literature This maker`s mark was long attributed to the Bolsward goldsmith Frans Rienks Baardt, cf. Peter Schoen, Tussen hamer en aambeeld; Edelsmeden in Friesland tijdens de Gouden Eeuw, Diss. Leiden 2016. Bolswarder Becher Silber. Auf profiliertem Standring der hohe konische Becher mit glattem, ausgestelltem Lippenrand. Die Wandung mit gravierten Fruchtgebinden und Vögeln zwischen drei Rollwerkkartuschen mit biblischen Szenen: 1. Adam und Eva mit der Schlange, 2. Cchristus und die Samariterin, 3. Die Flucht nach Ägypten. Darunter drei Sockel mit einem Hahn, einem Pfau und einem Wasservogel. Unter dem Standring gravierte Inschrift "JPPG Simckes Ende Houck Jacobs sin Wief", datiert 1651; unter dem Boden zwei gravierte Schilde, die Wappen entfernt. Marken: BZ Bolsward mit Jahresbuchstabe N für 1644, das MZ nach neuerer Forschung Jan Sjoerds zugeschrieben (tätig 1608 - 1657, Citroen S. 125). H 13,1 cm, Gewicht 148 g. Bolsward, Jan Sjoerds zugeschrieben, 1644. Wir bedanken uns bei Herrn Professor Johan ter Molen, Apeldoorn, für freundliche Auskünfte.
