Description

An INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLEMa Shaoxian Signed and dated xinchou year, corresponding to 1901 Of rounded rectangular shape, painted with a continuous mountainous lake landscape with a figure pulling a boat along the lakeshore below the inscription and seal Shaoxian , on one main face, and figures near willow and buildings on a lakeside with a mountain backdrop; stopper. 2 1/4in (5.7cm) high 辛丑年(1901) 馬少先 玻璃内畫山水人物鼻烟壺 Provenance: Susan Hickmott Robert C. Eldred, The Susan Hickmott Collection, 22 August 2003, lot 171 Exhibited: International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society Convention, New York, 5-9 November 2013, no. 97 See Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, Treasury, Vol. 4, Part 2 , Hong Kong, 2000, pp. 490-491, no. 496, for another bottle by Ma Shaoxian and a discussion of his working relation to his more famous Uncle Ma Shaoxuan. Ma Shaoxian was the son of his uncle's youngest brother. Ma Shaoxian's first dated bottles are from 1899. He seems to have only used his own name in bursts, sublimating his art to his uncle's signature the rest of the time. For two examples with similar landscapes but of later date and not as capably executed, see ibid., pp. 493-496, no's 627-628.
