* TO BE SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE * A CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN SQUARE ‘IMMORTAL’ DISH, MING DYNASTY, TIANQI PERIOD, 1621 – 1627 明天晵 青花指日高升人物纹方碟 The shallow rounded sides rising from a short straight foot to an everted rim, painted to the interior with an Immortal standing on a river bank with his right arm outstretched, four-character inscription zhi ri gao sheng (which may be translated as ‘may your chance of promotion be just around the corner’), all within an everted rim decorated in a chequered pattern, Japanese wood box (2) Width: 21cm Provenance: Mujintang Collection, purchased in Tokyo 2013 Exhibited: Robert Bradlow Fine Art, Reflecting Nature, 17th Century Chinese Ceramics for the Japanese Market: Kosometsuke & Koake, Catalogue no.9. Condition Report The dish has rim fritting to most of the outside edge of the rim and some further fritting on the inside edge, some large burst glaze bubbles to the interior, some areas of adhered kiln grit to the interior, a 3cm three-pointed glaze star crack to the base, kiln grit around the foot ring, and some further glaze flaking around the corners of the body.
