* TO BE SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE * A CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘MUSICIANS` DISH, QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD, 1662 – 1722 清 康熙 西洋人物奏樂圖紋碟 Painted with a central European subject of three musicians seated around a table, a lady playing a zither, two gentlemen accompanying on a flute and lute, all within a lotus-panelled border with classical Chinese landscape scenes, the underside with bamboo sprays Diameter: 34cm This rare dish is copied after an engraving by Nicolas Bonnart (1646 - 1718) and drawn by his brother Robert Bonnart, entitled ‘Symphonie du Tympanum, du Luth et de la Flute d’Allemagne’. A dish of this design is illustrated and discussed by David Howard & John Ayers, China for the West, Vol I. p.77, pl. 345 and sold Sotheby’s New York, 19th October 2000, lot 93. For other examples, see Christie’s New York, 23rd January 2012, lot 406 & 407, sold for $17,500 and $20,000 and RM Auctions, 31st October 2020, lot 288, sold for 15,937.50 euros (including premium) Condition Report This large and impressive dish has some burst glaze bubbles to the interior, five hairline rim cracks (circa 3, 4, 4, 4 and 5.5cm long), the longer crack with associated over-painting to the interior and exterior, a circa 5cm wide area of restoration to the rim, and light glaze crazing to the interior.
