Plusieurs artistes participèrent à sa décoration et Augustin Pajou fit partie de ce chantier. Des médaillons smilaires aux notres étaient enchassés sur les vantaux dun meuble à hauteur dappui qui habillait entièrement une cheminée-poêle dans le grand salon central. Médaillons et encadrements de bronze doré furent réalisés par Pierre Gouthière. Les cadres de nos deux bronzes reprennent dailleurs les motifs originaux fondus par Gouthière. Le meuble-cheminée, qui disparut dès 1776 à cause de défauts de fonctionnement du système de chauffage, est visible sur un dessin réalisé par Sir William Chambers lors de sa visite de lhôtel en 1769 (conservé au Royal Institute of British Architects, Londres, inv. SD2/7). Le sujet eut un grand succès au XIXe siècle et on retrouve les reliefs notamment sur plusieurs meubles et cabinets de Mathieu Béfort dit Béfort Jeune.The models of these two reliefs can be found on a chimney or a stove taking the form of a commode or meuble à hauteur dappui, commissioned by the Marquis Marc-René de Voyer de Paulmy dArgenson (1722-1782) for his hôtel known as the Chancellerie dOrléans. The hôtel, which was located in the Rue des Bons-Enfants, was restored by Charles de Wailly at the request of the Marquis from 1752. Several artists took part in its decoration and Augustin Pajou (1730-1809) was part of this project. Medallions with the same composition to ours were set into the doors of a commode framed by bronze elements by Pierre Gouthière; the current modern frames faithfully reproduce the original decoration. The commode-chimney, which disappeared, can be seen in a drawing made by Sir William Chambers during his visit to the hotel in 1769 (Royal Institute of British Architects, London, inv. SD2/7). The subject was very popular in the 19th century and the reliefs can be found on several pieces of furniture and cabinets by Mathieu Béfort, known as Béfort Jeune.
