Description A SIX-PANEL BYOBU SCREEN DEPICTING THE ARRIVAL OF A PORTUGUESE SHIPJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912)Finely decorated with ink, gouache, and gold foil on paper to depict a Portuguese ship arriving at a Japanese port, all amid thick clouds that cover most of the background. The left side with the ship filled with passengers and sailors, next to it the crew is unloading the goods, in the center a procession moving forward with the captain at its head, including a particular horse and two small dogs on a leash. The right side showing a store and above a place of worship with Jesuits and Franciscans kneeling and praying in front of an altar surmounted by a religious image. Sealed to the lower left. All within a silk brocade frame and mounted to a black-lacquered wood screen with gilt metal fittings with incised floral scroll.Condition: Good condition with minor wear and little soiling, some scratches and touch-ups, the wood screen with very few flakes to the lacquer and minimal scratches.
