Description A RARE SCROLL PAINTING DEPICTING THE DEATH OF THE HISTORICAL BUDDHA (NEHAN-ZU)Japan, dated 1900. Watercolor, gold color, and ink on silk. Depicting the deceased Buddha laying on a bed beneath flowering sala trees, attended by a large crowd of grieving mourners including deities, demons, mythical beasts, and animals. The upper register with his mother Mahamaya descending from heaven. The reverse inscribed, dated, and signed. Mounted as a hanging scroll on fabric coated paper, and with wooden handles.Inscriptions: The reverse 'Nehan painting, derivations' and dated 'Meiji 33 year (1900)', one artist seal.Condition: Very good condition, minor creasing, little soiling, the frame with minor tears and loose threads.
