Description UTAGAWA TOYOKUNI III: A COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT TYPTICH DEPICTING SOGA MONOGATARIBy Utagawa Toyokuni III (1786–1864), signed Kunisada zoJapan, circa 1830Depicting a scene from the Soga monogatari (Revenge of the Soga brothers), a kabuki play in which the Soga brothers, Soga and Goro assassinate Kudō Suketsune, the killer of their biological father.Condition: Good condition, worm holes, small repairs, staining, water marks, color fading, and minor creasing. The frame with a few small nicks.Provenance: Spanish private collection.Dimensions: Oban size 36.2 x 24 cm (each), Size incl. mounting 92.7 x 48 cmToyokuni III, also known as Utagawa Kunisada, was born in the Honjo district of Edo as Kunisada Tsunoda. Kunisada's family owned a small hereditary ferryboat service. Though his father, an amateur poet, died when Kunisada was a child, the family business provided some financial security. During his childhood, he showed considerable promise in painting and drawing. Due to strong familial ties with literary and theatrical circles, he spent time studying actor portraits.
