Scholarship would indicate 2,000 pieces were made in stainless steel, approximately less than 1,000 in both 14k and 18k gold. The reference 6241 was fitted with a new bezel featuring a black acrylic insert calibrated with a tachymetre scale printed in white. This insert was fitted with a metal support. This reference would feature the word 'Daytona' officially printed on the dial. The present example is further distinguished with its highly sought after champagne Paul Newman dial that has been preserved in very original and appealing condition. The lumes all react well under UV and the step is prominent and easy to identify. This dial is given the nickname 'champagne' due to the warm yellow tone, which is complimented by the contrasting black subsidiary dials and the outer 1/5 seconds track, both with gilt printing for the divisions and markers.
