North Africa, Ca. 400-500 AD. A fine pottery oil lamp The Atlante X; Hayes II A type. The lamp stands on a low ring foot, and its recessed tondo features a relief decoration of a dancer. The perimeter of the tondo is adorned with an intricate design of flowers and rosettes that adds to the lamp's aesthetic appeal. The lamp also features a lug to the back and two holes in the tondo, which served as filling holes. The long channeled nozzle of the lamp has a spout for a wick, and its shape is designed to minimize spills and maximize light output. The dancer's pose is suggestive of a ritual dance, which may have been performed during religious ceremonies or social gatherings.
