DAISHIN GITO (1657 – 1730) Edo period, 17th / 18th Century Three Jewels of Buddhism A Japanese hanging scroll painting, kakejiku, ink on paper, inscribed, sealed and signed, inscribed on the exterior Daishin Osho hitsu, Daitokuji ni shichi san sei, chakake (painted by priest Osho, Daitoku temple, no 273, for tea ceremony) 32cm high, 50cm long - PROVENANCE: English Private Collection of Zenga, ex collection of Daikokuji temple Daishin Gito (1657 – 1730) was a high-ranking priest of the Rinzai Zen sect, rising to the honour of bing the 273rd abbot of Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto in 1709. He was involved with tea ceremony practice and one of his disciples was Kakukakusai (16787 – 1730), later the 6th head of the Omotesenke school. An example of Gito's painting is housed in the collection of the Harvard Art Museum accession no 1985.666 and Minneapolis Institute of Art accession no 2001.267.1.
