Swan received his artistic training in England and Paris, successfully working in various mediums. Member of the Royal Academy, the Dutch Water-Colour Society, he exhibited at the Parisian Academy since 1878, winning first-class gold medal for painting and sculpture in the Paris Exhibition in 1900. His painting Prodigal Son features in the collection of Tate Britain.
