A BURMESE RED AND BLACK LACQUER 'ELEPHANT' BOX AND COVER Saya Khin Workshop, Pagan, 19th/20th Century Of rectangular thitta form and decorated using the yun technique in red, yellow and black, the cover depicting an elephant and a human figure amongst trees, enclosed by a border of leafy stems issuing flowerheads and two panels bearing the inscription 'from the workshop of Saya Khin, Bazaar Quarter, Pagan' in Burmese, the sides decorated with prowling animals amongst shrubbery, the base with a large striding chinthe apanied by a signature, 17.4cm wide, 6.5cm high (2) - PROVENANCE: Previously in the collection of a British missionary family residing in Burma in the 1920s-30s; Collection of Prospect Burma, UK. - c.f.
