Late Period, ca. 664-332 BC. A sculpted pottery head of a bull symbolizing the divinity Apis, featuring wonderfully carved facial features, ears, and horns. It would be a throne armrest, the reduced horns of this piece are the result of this use. The animal's head is mounted on a custom-made stand, allowing for its striking presence to be fully appreciated. The bull's eyes are deeply incised, giving the impression of a powerful and alert gaze, while lines beneath the eyes and along the snout suggest a sense of ferocity and strength. The gently curved snout, slits for nostrils, and thin, slightly parted mouth with outward bulges to indicate lips complete the animal's imposing yet elegant visage. Size: L:130mm / W:190mm ; 2.57kgProvenance: Property of a London Ancient Art gallery, acquired on Monaco Art market; formerly Cannes, private collection acquired at the Galerie Carrefour (Pierre and Claude Vérité) in the 1980s.
