A FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN 'BATS AND CHIMES' SNUFF BOTTLE, LATE QING DYNASTY
China, 19th - early 20th century. Of flattened pear-shaped form raised on a short oval foot with shoulders sloping to a waisted neck with a gilt lip. The body symmetrically decorated on each side with a bronze chime suspended from an iron-red bat, above a stylized lotus spray, surrounded by leafy tendrils bearing flowers. The narrow sides with stylized flowerheads, all reserved on a bright and remarkably even turquoise ground. The neck encircled by interlocking ruyi heads and the foot by a band of scroll.

A copy of the original collector’s notes for the present lot written by Kim Green, detailing the purchase from Marsha Vargas on 26 April 2008, accompanies this lot. Note that in these collector’s notes, the present lot is dated to the Republic period. Xanadu Gallery was established in 1979 by Marsha Vargas in San Francisco and offers antiquities and art from Asia, Oceania, and Latin America. The gallery continues to this day and is located in the historic Frank Lloyd Wright building off Union Square. Kim Green was a trained geologist and geochemist, serving as director of the Office of the Chief Scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With her profound understanding and affection for snuff bottles and their unique tactile attributes, she built a deliberately limited and exclusive collection that she cherished intimately.
Condition:
Superb condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, includind pitting and dark spots. The base with light scratches. Displaying remarkably well. Matching stopper!
