Nakahara Nantenbô, born in the prefecture Nagasaki was also known as Tôjû or with his buddhist name Zenchû. At the age of 11 he became a monk at the Yûkô-ji Tempel. Later he changed to the Enpukuji in Kyôto and other temples. With twenty-six he was recognized by the head priest of the Bairin-ji Razan Genma as his dharma heir and received the priestly name Haikugaikutsu. The Rinzai monk is also known as a Zen painter and calligrapher. His name Nantenbô is based on his use of the nandina staff.
