1st century BC-1st century AD. A bronze ewer handle comprising a vineleaf appliqué, round-section gently curved handle with lateral buds and collar, reclining nude figure of a bacchant supporting his weight on he lift forearm and with the right hand raised to the brow; the lower finial lateral scrolls flanking a facing mask of a Maenad with chiton fastened at the left shoulder exposing the right breast. Cf. Rolland, H. Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 290 for type. 749 grams, 29cm (11 1/2"). From the collection of a North London gentleman; acquired in the 1980s. Fine condition.
