An Adlake 'Special' camera, manufactured by The Adams and Westlake Company of Chicago, Illinois from 1897 to approximately 1920. Manufacturer's stamp ADLAKE THE A & W CO. CHICAGO. Advertised as the easiest to use, producing the best photographs and never out of order. The camera took 12 exposures on 4x5 inch plates with a single daylight loading. The 12 single metal plate holders were light tight and dust proof. It was fitted with an extra rapid achromatic lens, specially ground and the Adlake shutter with three diaphragm stops. Covered in Seal Grain leather. Adams & Westlake Co. of Chicago, Illinois USA, was at one time America's most successful railroad lantern makers. It produced oil lamps, acetylene lamps, bicycles and cameras, and is still manufactures railroad equipment.
