A South German bone-inlaid Renaissance crossbow with hunting motifs, circa 1600/20 Iron prod with the original green woollen pompoms. A mark struck in the inside on the left. The anchors with the iron ring attached, braided hemp bowstring. The tiller made of walnut, the top and bottom entirely veneered in bone. The sides with depictions of hunters and game amidst leafy vines. A finely engraved depiction of Fortuna on the underside, below which a bear playing the bagpipes. Adam and Eve are represented on the lower end of the butt. The nut made of bone and secured with thread, multi-axle lock mechanism, folding trigger. A thumb depression and mounting holes for the aperture sight on the top. Length 65.5 cm.Provenance: From the Schulthess collection (CH).Condition: II -
