An important Chinese blue and white decorated vase with deer and poem, probably 18th centuryFinely crafted vase with blue and white underglazed decoration. On the front, masterly painted, a pine tree, a crane and a deer. On the back a letter written in six columns with Chinese characters and three marks. Intact. No cracks, no chips. Height 42 cm. With box. In Chinese culture pine trees symbolize endurance, grace, and long life. The deer also stands for longevity. The Chinese word for deer is "lu" which also means income. The crane is the second most favored bird symbol after the phoenix, embodying peace and also longevity. Consequently, the combined meanings represent a prosperous long life. Provenance: German private collection (Munich). Previously in an aristocratic collection, acquired by Paul v. H. between 1914-17, when he was on duty in the German embassy in Beijing.Condition: II +
